The Word Never Grows Stale

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

What an encouraging statement, even after thousands of years the Word never grows stale.

As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. So no matter what season you are in, remember the Word will always give you exactly what you need in the moment you need it most.

Friends what does it mean to fully understand and rely on God's living Word?

For me, it means believing and trusting it wholeheartedly. God's Word says he can use all situations for our good (Romans 8:28), it comforts us during times of despair (Matthew 5:4), it strengthens us when we face adversities (Isaiah 41:10) and it guides and directs our steps (Psalm 32:8). But the key is we must give up control and completely surrender our situations and outcomes to Him.

How many of us are able to let go of our circumstances? I would bet if we are honest most of us would say it's a challenge for us. Some may say "if I let go my life will fall apart" so we find ourselves holding on by a thread, not realizing that God has us in the palm of his hands so we have no reason to fear when we let go. Others may give God control of certain areas but not all areas of their life because we have convinced ourselves that we know the best way to handle our situations. Does this sound like you? Well you are not alone, I have certainly been guilty of this myself.

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

At times you may hear people say the Bible is outdated or no longer relevant for our times but those statements could not be further from the truth. I believe people who make these statements were never taught how to rely on God for the strength and peace He promises or perhaps it's their way of justifying a lifestyle that God does not approve of (Proverbs 3:7-8). I can tell you from personal experience that the Bible is definitely not stale and it is very much alive because throughout my life when I have relied on God's Word it has brought me encouragement, hope, love, forgiveness, grace and mercy.

Often times we find ourselves feeling convicted when we read the Word and I believe that is God speaking to us directly because when I feel convicted I know God is showing me where I need to change so that I can walk closer with Him. It's humbling for sure, but I'm grateful he loves me enough to show me when I am wrong. He is our heavenly Father, I wouldn't expect anything less from him, it's no different than our parents showing us right from wrong when we were growing up.

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

So no matter what season you find yourself in I encourage you to read God's Word. Learn what it means to rely on it because it's there to guide you, comfort you, encourage you and strengthen you for your journey!

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Thank you for sharing these insights, Jill. God’s Word contains everything we need to walk through life, especially when we hit the valleys of grief and sadness-it amazes me how so often just the right verse shows up right when I need it!
