Tapestry of Grief
Updated: Jan 25, 2023
This past weekend I attended the National Bereaved Parents of the USA Conference and while it was nice to be greeted by familiar faces from years past, it was also heartbreaking to see so many new faces there as well. But I am grateful they found their way to BP/USA for support, because it certainly helped Curt & I with our own grief journey all those years ago!
One of the workshops I attended was about writing our story and the title "Tapestry of Grief" came to mind as I visualized our grief stories being woven together by the love we all have for our children. Each child's life is a colorful thread that represents their lives and their unique personalities and as they are woven together by the creators hands a beautiful design is being created in his tapestry.
Our family, friends and communities are currently dealing with the Dixie Fire burning in Northern California (which is now the 2nd largest fire in California's history) and I have realized that this experience is also weaving a unique bond between twelve of us as we are staying together at a friends cabin & others are staying close by due to being evacuated from our homes. I think of how blessed we all are that they have allowed all of us to be here with them. We share meals together, we pray together, we've shared laughter and tears and even enjoy playing games (guys against the girls of course). :) We are learning so much about each other's lives that I can't help but be grateful for the time God has given us so that we can offer support to one another. We have friends who have lost their homes in this fire so it's been comforting to be together and to pray for one another. Even in the midst of tragedies like the death of our children or losing our homes God provides the support we need to get through these devastating times.
Galatians 6:2
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
I encourage you to look at your own situation and find ways to create a tapestry of your life experiences. Share your story with those around you and watch the bonds & friendships form. We all have a different journey and it's pretty remarkable to have the opportunity to learn from one another and to carry those lessons with us on our journeys.
Ephesians 4:1-3
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
John 15:12
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
