Learning To Live By The Word

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Our question of the day is: What is the best way to live by the Word?

Here's a few thoughts I had: One way to live by the word is to apply it in your daily life which means moment by moment you are taking inventory of your thoughts, actions and words; and when they don't align with God's Word we should ask God to help us change them.

Another way is by following 1 Thessalonians 5:17 "pray continually." Prayers are so important because this is our direct contact with God, we should ask for His wisdom and strength and I would even take it a step further and say we need to thank Him for helping us in our times of need as well. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says we should: give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

During our Women's Bible study last night we were talking about surrendering our "I wants" and how to overcome our strong urges and cravings. How many of us go the grocery store for a couple of items and end up walking out of there with things we didn't need? Are you raising your hand? Well I can certainly relate. The minute we walk past the chip or ice cream aisle those "I wants" start to rise up and before you know it we've added items to our cart that we had no intention of buying. It's in those weak moments that we need to immediately pause and ask God for his strength to overcome the urge in order to prevent us from buying foods that are not good for us.

Last night one of the ladies asked "why are we not praying before we walk in the grocery store?" She was spot on and what a great question for all of us to ask ourselves, why are we NOT praying? It's such a simple way for us to rely on God. 1 John 3:21-22 says: Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. I love this reminder because when we overcome our cravings that pleases God because we are relying on Him to satisfy our needs not this temporary urge that will only bring us guilt and shame later on.

Joshua 1:8

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Friends, we will always be tempted whether it's food, shopping, social media or even binge watching TV. We need to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit when he is prompting us to walk away or to turn off the television. When we start paying attention to this prompting and follow it that is when we have begun to apply the Word to our daily lives!

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

So whatever you feel God prompting you to do I encourage you to follow His lead. I can guarantee when you follow Him you'll never be misled.

I also encourage you to pray before you go into a grocery store, before you get online, before you pick up your phone and before you turn on your television and ask God to guide you every moment of every day!

We need to saturate our minds in God's Word so that we can begin to live by it and know what God's plan is for our lives.

Revelations 1:3

Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
