Holding The Tongue
Updated: Jan 25, 2023
Have you ever said anything you regretted? I bet we would all answer yes to this question. How often do you find yourself hesitating whether or not to speak up or to respond to a comment you hear? When I stop and think about what I'm about to say often times I realize I don't need to say anything.
I feel like this goes hand & hand with the message from yesterday in the sense that we should always be cautious & prudent when it comes to holding our tongue. Knowing a response is not always necessary especially during a heated argument. In fact, we need to remind ourselves that God will fight our battles for us. Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
Proverbs 21:23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.
The 5 questions in this "THINK" quote are questions I have asked myself. They help me to stay mindful of my thoughts.
What is your daily practice for holding your tongue?
Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
The tongue is a small body part yet it has the capability to destroy relationships. Let's make sure we are choosing our words wisely James 3:1-12 is a great reminder of this!
Our challenge is to use our tongues to build each other up and look for ways to encourage and inspire those around us.
1 Peter 3:8-12 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
