Having a Humble Spirit

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

How many of us know someone with a humble spirit?

The first person that comes to mind for me is my Grandma Bradford. If you have read my previous posts you will know she is someone I have looked up to and admired my entire life. In fact, her quiet, sweet spirit still inspires me every day even though she's been gone for over 20 years. To be truthful, some days are not so easy, but I still strive to follow in her footsteps. Speak less, listen more intentionally and seek ways to be a service to others!

Ephesians 4:2

Be completely humble and gentle;

be patient, bearing with one another in love.

What are some habits of a humble person?

  • They are situationally aware (they focus on others around them & their needs)

  • They retain relationships (have strong personal or professional relationships)

  • They practice active listening

  • They have a servant and grateful heart

  • They seek knowledge, ask for help knowing they don't have all the answers

As you look at the list above, where do you see yourself in the list? Have you ever thought of yourself as being humble?

Do you volunteer your time? Do you help others? Then I would bet you are more of a humble person than you realize. Perhaps this list makes you realize there is room for improvement. If that's the case, remember we are all a work in progress!! As Maya Angelou says "when we know better we do better" I encourage you to give yourself a break and begin looking for ways to change your habits, look for ways to be of service.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

How do we develop humility and incorporate it into our daily lives?

  • Acknowledge God & be grateful for what you have - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

  • Spend time listening to others - James 1:19

  • Ask for help when you need it - James 1:5

  • Be a service to others - Luke 6:35

  • Stop grumbling and passing judgment - Matthew 7:1-2

  • Admit mistakes and weaknesses - James 5:16

  • Forgive and bless others - Matthew 6:14-115

Friends, it's important to avoid false humility by holding our power and positions lightly. We should always accept praise graciously and authentically. Focus on serving others. Jesus was a great example of how to serve, especially when he washed the feet of his disciples.

Our challenge this week is to look for ways to serve others.

1 Peter 3:8 "Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble."
