Benefits of Discipline
Updated: Jan 25, 2023
There are many forms of self discipline, whether it's eating healthier, exercising daily, faithfully spending time with God, being mindful of your words (think before you speak) etc. some disciplines are easier to be consistent with than others. Would you consider yourself self disciplined? Do you need to establish better habits? If so, what would you improve?
We gain so many benefits when we live disciplined lives, yet at times it seems difficult to be consistently disciplined? I have found I am disciplined in some areas and not as much in others, can you relate?
What are the benefits of discipline?
Here's just a few: we gain a sense of direction for our lives, we become more efficient and productive, we become spiritually mature, healthier, happier, we eliminate negative habits!
I have been reading a book called "Celebration of Discipline" the path to spiritual growth by Richard J Foster. It talks about various disciplines such as inward (prayer, meditation, fasting, study) & outward (simplicity, solitude, submission, service) as well as corporate disciplines (confession, worship, guidance, celebration). It's a great tool for transforming our daily lives and becoming more disciplined in our spiritual walk with God.
Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Who do you know that is disciplined? For me it would be my husband, he is disciplined with his exercise goals whether it's running, biking, hiking etc.
Self disciplined people have an inner strength that allows them to control their reactions and avoid temptations, which ultimately helps them achieve their goals and become successful.
Sound like the person you want to become? Well you can be!
When we keep our focus on the "benefits" of being self disciplined we avoid becoming overwhelmed by the task in front of us. Overtime you will slowly begin to see the benefits manifest in your life.
Hebrews 12:10-11 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Take some time to determine what improvements you need to make and create a goal for yourself, include the steps you need to take to accomplish those goals. Every day do one thing that brings you closer to that goal.
Start small, look at your list daily and remember it's important to hold yourself accountable! Don't allow excuses to keep you from becoming the best version of yourself.
Friends we need to become better managers of our time, health and spiritual lives. I look forward to hearing how you were able to accomplish your goals. I hope you'll share your story with me!
Proverbs 13:4
The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
